Visnjan

Visnjan is situated in the continental part of the Istrian peninsula as well as near the sea. It is at only 12 kilometers east of Porec and 3 kilometers west of Pula-Koper road. According to the 2001 census it has a population of 625 with a total municipal population of 2.187. Most of Visnjan's economy comes from agriculture mostly olive growing and viticulture. In addition, most of the people work on the coast and travel daily to work. Inhabitants are known as very diligent people.


The old part, placed on a hilltop, has been inhabited since ancient times. Due to its mild climate and favorable soil, Visnjan has excellent vineyards and is one of Istria's agro-tourism centers and a destination on Istria's wine roads.

In Visnjan you can see a unique Geno-park of authentic Istrian cattle and the world well-known observatory and two kilometres away, in Nova Vas, there is a wonderful cave Baredine. In this area you can wonder around, cycle through wine trails, visit numerous wine-cellars and taste different Istrian food specialities and wine. For those interested in hunting, Visnjan and its surrounding area have a developed hunting tourism. Downtown there are shops, restaurants, a pharmacy and a bank.

It is famous for its astronomical observatory, ranked among the 5 most important in the world. Look for a guiding star and refresh yourself with a glass of excellent home made wine. You can also learn something about astrology during your vacation - School of Astronomy, is a summer workshop of astronomy located in the Visnjan Observatory.

You can enjoy sightseeing of Visnjan and its beautiful sacral art. The main altar in the parish church features an altar painting presenting SS. Cyricus and Julitta, a work by Zorzi Ventura dating from the 17th century. An especially harmonious church is St. Anthony the Abbot from the 15th century. Višnjan also has a genetic farm of the autochthonous Istrian ox, the popular "boskarin" whose strength and span of horns have become a legend.

Cycling is also a popular acitivty. Tourist cycling consists of a number of different pleasures, one of them is to experience the unique sense of closeness to nature and the local culture as you ride through it.

In this area you can wonder around, cycle through wine trails, visit numerous wine-cellars and taste different Istrian food specialities and wine. You can enjoy specialities made of venison in a typical istrian environment where serve you the traditional istrian specialities. But you can try numerous restaurants and taverns that offer specialities of both domestic and international cuisine.
