Vis travel & tourism guide

Vis is the most westerly of the larger Croatian islands, at 24 miles from the mainland, and its area is 56 square miles (90 square km). The island is quite easily reachable with a fast boat service from Split. It is a beautiful, unspoilt island in the middle of the Adriatic. The island and samename town go back to ancient times and have had a turbulent history, which can be seen by the numerous buildings and archeological sites.

It brims with history and is a haven for those with archaeological interest or people who just enjoy a rich Mediterranean sense of the past. The island has been a Greek Polis, a Roman stronghold, a Venetian possession and was occupied by the British during World War 2.

Vis Vis is a small town on an island of the same name. Chief occupations are farming, wine production, fishing and tourism. The town is situated on the regional road. Close to the town there are several sandy and pebble beaches (Parja, Rogacic, Mala Svitnja and Vela Svitnja). The island's biggest and most beautiful sandy beach Zaglav is situated 10km south of town, near Milna village. You can't drive all the way to Zaglav. You have to leave your car in Milna and then walk for about 10 minutes along the coastline path. You can also use a taxi boat from Milna. Because of the sandy beach, Zaglav cove is often visited by yachts.

Komiza Komiza is the small town and port on the western coast of the island, in the deep bay of Komiza, at the foot of the hill Hum. The inhabitants work in fishing, agriculture (vineyards, vegetables, citrus fruits, carobs), and tourism. On the eastern coast of the bay there are large gravel beaches (Gusarica, Nova Posta, Velo zalo) from Komiza, one can get a boat to visit the nearby small island of Bisevo, which is famous for its Blue Grotto (Modra Spilja). The accommodation in Komiza is available in the hotel or in apartments in private houses that are on disposal during the whole year.

Both population centres, the small harbour towns of Vis and Komiza have graceful Venetian architecture along the harbour fronts and are a delight to explore. It is surrounded by crystal clear water and has several uninhabited islands off its shore, the most famous being Bisevo, home to the Blue Grotto, a magical cave Fishing is the dominant occupation. Inland, the island produces wine and olive oil. Some of the most exclusive wines in Croatia are produced on the island, such as Plavac and Vugava.Good quality accommodation in hotels or apartments, unpolluted environment with the crystal clear sea and marine scenery as well as the local specialities - seafood from the cleanest part of the Adriatic, various sports and recreation opportunities, they all constitute the tourist offer.
