Travel to Slavonia

Slavonia is a geographical and historical region in eastern Croatia. It is a fertile region that stretches from the Ilova River in the west, over the Sava and Drava basins to the Hungarian border in the north.It is the most fertile part of Croatia which, in addition to its agricultural values, also offers diverse tourism attractions. It is perfect choice for tourists who want to experience the peace of a region full of local charm. It is also known for its Hungarian-influenced tasty cuisine, exquisite wines and gentle, welcoming atmosphere, numerous hunting grounds, fishing in the rivers and fish ponds.


The most famous natural heritage is Kopacki Rit, wich is the biggest natural wetlands in Europe and the birdlife is spectacular. It is also known for it's Djakovo Lipicaner Horse Breed, that is breed in Ðakovo for centuries.This agricultural region is comprised of large swaths of forest, perfect for nature-lovers on holiday in Croatia.It is also the region of thermal springs, castles and wheat, where people traditionally live from agriculture and therefore many public festivities and customs are related to the natural rhythm of growth and the annual schedule of works in the fields.

Administratively, it consists of the following counties: Vukovar–Srijem; Virovitica–Podravina; Pozega-Slavonia; Osijek-Baranja; and Brod-Posavina.

osijek, slavonia Osijek, located on the banks of the river Danube is the largest city and the economic and cultural centre of Slavonia , as well as the administrative center of the Osijek-Baranja county. With a population of 114,616, it is the fourth largest city in Croatia. It is also a great destination for lovers of architecture.

Other major citys are, Slavonski Brod, the second largest city in region, Vinkovci, Vukovar,the heroic city and the biggest river port in Croatia, Virovitica, Pozega, Djakovo,with its glorious neo-Romanesque cathedral, Ilok, surrounded by the magnificent vineyards and wine roads.


This region, and especially Osijek, is well connected with the rest of the country. Lot of trains and buses operate between Zagreb and Osijek daily. If you use the modern motorway from Zagreb, you will reach Osijek in 2.5 hours. Osijek has an international airport. Here you can check for cheap flights.
