Sinj

Sinj is a town in the continental part of Split-Dalmatia county , Croatia. The town itself has a population of 11,500 (2001 census), while the population of the administrative municipality which includes surrounding villages is 25,373 (2001). Town is the center of an area known as Cetinska krajina, a group of settlements situated on a fertile karstic field through which the river Cetina passes.

Chief occupations include farming, livestock breeding, textiles, threads factory, plastic masses and tourism (religious.

It lies between four mountains: Svilaja, Dinara, Kamešnica and Visoka. Those mountains give to town it's specific submediterranean climate (hotter summers and colder winters). The town grew around an ancient fortress held by the Ottomans until the beginning of the 18th century, and the Franciscan monastery with the church of Our Lady of Sinj, a place of pilgrimage.

From most part it is not a tourist destination. It is known for two main events. Each yer the Alka helds there. The second main event centers around The Francicsca Church of Our Lady of Sinj wich is pilgrimage site related to a painting of the Virgin wich was brought to the church in the 1400s. The anniversary of the last victory over the Ottoman army in 1715 is celebrated yearly in the beginning of August by Alka. Alka is the major attraction, for which the town is known at home and abroad. It takes place every year on the first Sunday in August to commemorate the victory over the Turkish army in 1715 .when 500 Croatian soldiers defeated a Turkish army of 60,000. The tilters, dressed in the traditional costumes, ride on horseback in full gallop, trying to thrust a ring (alka), hanging from a wire, with a lance. The tilter who scores the highest number of points (punat) is declared victor. Many tourists from Croatia and abroad visit the Tilters Tournament every year.

You did not know for sure, if you go for a walk along the Vrlicka street at the center of the town, and stop in front of the house number 10, you will see a grave monument of the young Roman Gaj Liberie who holds a football in his hands, with which man played football in the Cetina region already in the antique. The world football association FIFA confirmed in its official bulletin this oldest mode of football in Europe and in the world.

It is known to be a place where gastronomy is apreciated. Numerous catering objects offer accommodation and the traditional cuisine of the Cetinska Krajina. Someone once said, only in Sinj, people eat everything that flies, crawls, walks and swims. It is known for great frogs, cray-fish, trout and arambasici(filled cabbage rolls) .

The surroundings, the whole Cetinska Krajina is very attractive (rivers, springs, lakes, caves, the large field). The beautiful and unpolluted environment enables a pleasant holiday, including sports, recreational, hunting and fishing opportunities, recreational horse-back riding and riding school. An airport for aerial sports with a grass runway is located near the racecourse.
