Podgora

The name Podgora in total translation means – below mountain – and it is, like every other beautiful place at Makarska riviera that deserves your attention. It is truly an fisherman's village with long tradition of living in a friendship with the sea which gives so much to the domestic people. This settlement is mentioned for the very first time somewhere about 1570. It was under the Venice protection as one of the safer anchorage in this part of the coast.But anchor positions are not the only thing what town can offer today; there's beautiful pebble beach, hundred and hundred meters long, so tame and accessible for you and children and for your pets also. You'll be astonished....under Biokovo mountain in classical Mediterranean environment where the sea is so clear and warm... beaches are the main attraction here.

Beside nature beauty, it has very active cultural workers who organize an event „Cultural summer“ which last from june untill october; each day there's different concerts, shows, theatre plays and other contents. Young people easily can reach neighbouring Makarska, Baska Voda, Brela or Tucepi and find their fun there in case if they want to roam around riviera, older generations can enjoy in sightseeing all of the churches and monuments; there's lot of remains in Upper Podgora which was inhabited 'till 1962; an strong earthquake destroyed all the houses, medieval churhes and the tower left behind Turks conquests...

This destination is in the Middle Dalmatia and not so far away (about 70 km) from Split airport, it's easily reachable if you travel with the car also; there's modern highways or you can use the old but very functional Adriatic road, so called Jadranska magistrala. Town has (like other settlements at Makarska riviera) a good connections with neighbouring islands Brac and Hvar and it's recommended to visit at least one of its. Everywhere here you can taste domestic meals; if you like to eat fish, be sure that every fisherman's boat you can see at the harbour brings a fresh supplies to the restaurants. No matter which you choose; everyone is the best. Of course, there's lot of domestic olive oil which is indispensable supplement in Dalmatian cousine.

Town has an nickname; Adriatic's princess...so, in accordance with feminine nature of her, Podgora will take you gently giving all she has, inviting you to come back next summer...and she easily can make you bedazzled. Because of its geographical position, sea is already warm in the early spring and during the winter times temperatures very rarely goes below 10 degrees; this village has the optimum conditions for the further development of winter tourism and in companionship with the other places at riviera and with Biokovo mountain behind (which is attractive for climbers) it really can become your favorite destination.
