Orebic

Orebic lies on the south side of the Peljesac peninsula, at the foot of St. Ilija Hill (961 meters), a position exposed to sunshine the entire day. This picturesque town is an irresistible temptation to tourists seeking natural beauty of centennial pines, cypresses, olives, almonds, agaves and flowers gardens, and sunny pebble or sand beaches which in some places stretch for miles and in others are punctuated by small bays with crystal clear waters. Tourism is one of the town's most important industries.

Orebic, Peljesac Peljesac is well known because of its vineyards and top quality wines, there are many excursions organized such as walking tours on signed paths, visit to vineyards and vine cellar.Originate wines from the Peljesac peninsula are: "Dingac", "Postup", "Plavac" i "Peljesac". Gastronomic offer is excellent, it's certainly worth to try oysters and mussels from the local breeding sites offered in many restaurants.

History and herritage

It is founded in the late 15th and early 16th century. In 1586th seafarers families Orebic restored the castle in the middle of the fortified settlement, which was called by them Orebic, which is to 16 century named Trstenica. From 17 Century ships from Peljesac constituted an important part of Dubrovnik's merchant fleet.

Two kilometers west of town, on a nearby hill, is a Gothic - Renaissance Franciscan monastery from the 15th century in which the art collection, offering a magnificient view of the unique natural beauty of this region.

On the hill above the monastery is a Gothic church, restored in Baroque style church of Our Lady of Karmen. Next to it are ancient sarcophagi and several age-old, huge cypresses, as a Baroque loggia and the ruins of the castle Trstenica Duke. In the village, visit the Maritime Museum.

Events

Traditionaly St. Anhony is celebrated on June 13th in Stankovici, Our Lady of Karmen on July 16th in Karmen, St. Jacob on July 25th in Mokalo, The Assumption of Mary on August 15th in Podgorje and Postup, St. Roko on August 16th in Crkvice and Mala Gospa on September 8th in Nakovana.

Sailors nights and Night of the sails are the central festivities in the summer on the first thursday in August. During the summer there are open-air theater performances and other cultural manifestations such as painter exhibitions, classicals music concerts and poetry meetings.

How to get

It's approximately 200 km from Split on the north and about 50 km from Dubrovnik on the south. It has good road traffic connection. With fast coastal ferry lines is connected with Rijeka, Split, Hvar, Korcula and Dubrovnik. The nearest airports are Dubrovnik Airport and Split Airport.
