Motovun
The picturesque medieval town of Motovun lies in the northwest part of central Istria high up on a hill (177m) overlooking the valley of the river Mirna.The city offers a number of wineries, restaurants, hotel, apartments and rooms. In the city's surroundings, guests can also enjoy there holiday in agrotourism which also offers accomodation including apartments and rooms.
It is one of the most well preserved medieval towns in all of Istria. The centre of town was built as a fortress surrounded by thick stone walls which protected the city from intruders. As tourism in this area grew, those walls were adapted into walkways on which visitors can walk around the city and enjoy the spectacular view of the green hills and valleys of central Istria. Within the wall of Motovun lies a palace, a town square, and the town church as well as many other cultural and historical monuments. Town also has the longest stairwell in Istria, from the top of the hill to the bottom there are a total of 1052 stairs.

Vineyards are known for famous wines Pinot, Teran and Malvazija.Motovun forest, which extends for kilometres along the Mirna valley, is the dwelling place of the famed underground mushrooms, truffles that are extracted in this region with the help of specially trained dogs. Summer and early autumn is the period when black truffles come to fruition, whereas the Istrian the most tasteful and precious white truffles are gathered in late autumn and winter. During the summer months the international film festival takes place. Visitors from all over the world come here to watch films which represent different cultures as well as take part in different artistic workshops.It is a town of history, culture, and it is surrounded by breathtaking nature. It is the perfect place for a relaxing yet fascinating holiday.

Motovun is well known for it's popular Motovun Film Festival. The festival is established in 1999 and since then it become one of the most popular places to be for five days in late July every year.For the festival's five days, some 60 films are shown at five different locations with 1500 available seats. In addition to the film series, you can visit exhibitions, concerts and conferences or just party with the other 30,000 or so people that stream in and out of the village. Festival of balloons, wine and truffles , held at the beginning of November. The traditional "Motovun samanj", is an annual local feast day which celebrates the consecration of the parish church of Saint Stephan. It is held on August 2nd. The traditional local games "bacanje roga (throwing of the horn)" are an integral part of Lent (Lent festivities)
how to get
Motovun is 15 miles or 25 kilometres northeast of Porec on the road to Buzet. There are about five daily buses from Porec for the 35-minute trip.
