Mljet travel & tourism guide
Mljet is the largest island of the Dubrovnik archipelago. It is 37 km long and has an avarage amplitude of 3km. The luxurious beauty of this island is all wrapped up in legends and has entered the myths of the ancient people. Homer mentions the wonderful nature of Ogygia where Odysseus roamed about, and many people think that the marvellous Ogygia might actually have been the really marvellous island.
The seaside villages of Pomena, Polace, Sobra and Saplunara attract the most visitors. They come for the hiking, biking, swimming, stunning scenery and peaceful atmosphere that reign everywhere. The lushly forested island is so seductive, it's said that Odysseus came and stayed for seven years. This island is the greenest Adriatic island and one third of the island falls under the National park, wich was declared because of its exceptional natural beauty, rich flora and fauna, beaches, fishing and lobster and numerous cultural and historic monuments make it a very attractive tourist destination. The Park is characterized by two deep bays which are called lakes due to their narrow passages to the open sea (Veliko and Malo jezero/ the Great Lake and the Small Lake). Both lakes are surrounded by dense Mediterranean vegetation. There is a tiny island in one of the lakes, called Melita, with 12th century Benedictine monastery. There are a lot of legend connected with this island - one of them is that Mljet was holiday destination of greek hero Ulysses! To it's guests the hosts will offer the known goat cheese, the honey, various sea fruits and the vine. Accommodation is available in the hotel and in many private homes. The island is perhaps best visited on a day trip from Dubrovnik and Korcula. Getting There There are daily ferries from Dubrovnik to Sobra on island. Journey time is 2 hours 15 minutes. There is also a ferries service from Prapratno on the mainland (on the Peljesac peninsula) to Sobra - this journey is only 45 minutes.
