It is 46.8 km long, its average width is 5.3 to 7.8 km, it covers an area of 270 km , and is the sixth largest Adriatic island. This island is known for its dense forest and the ancient Greeks called the island Black Korcula (Kerkyra melaina) for this reason.

The islanders occupy themselves with fishing, shipbuilding and stone-masonry as well as cultivating vineyards, olive trees, orange trees, fig trees and almond trees. The island represents a unique fusion of beautiful nature, thousands of years of cultural tradition and history, and modern tourism. Numerous beautiful beaches and bays, luxurious hotels and summer houses, centuries old olive groves and vineyards, and ancient towns and villages on the island which seem as if they have remained lost in some long past time attract tourist from all over the world to this island. The main resorts are Korcula Town (people call it "Little Dubrovnik" because of its medieval squares, churches, palaces and houses), Vela Luka and Lumbarda.

The vicinity of Dubrovnik as well as island Mljet gives visitors unique opportunity to spend time at this unspoiled Island as well as to visit effortlessly Mljet national park, Dubrovnik or Makarska Riviera.

KORCULA TOWN - the main town on the island, with population of about 3000 inhabitants. With it's numerous buildings and monuments, cafes, hotels, restaurants, galleries, cinema etc, Town is very popular for visitors as central location from which they explore the rest of the island. It is an administrative center of the area. The city has two swimming beaches and just west of the city are the inlets of Srecica, Banja, and Vrbovica which are also great places to have some fun in the sun. The city offers a large variety of private accommodations which include apartments, rooms, Bed & Breakfasts and luxurious villas. This beautiful historical city is one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in Croatia.Korcula Old Town is the main attraction of Town - a medieval walled city positioned on a oval-shaped swelling of land pointing deep into Peljesac Channel. The Old Town center is dominated by the splendid St Mark's Cathedral built in the Gothic-Renaissance style, completed in 15th century at the place of other church from 13th century. It is interesting to mention that Marco Polo, the famous adventurer, was born on Korcula, and his house can still be viewed there. The house is under the protection of the Korcula Town Hall and it will soon be turned into a Museum of Marco Polo. Every year in June Korcula hosts the game of knights Moraska which involves the traditional Dalmatian sword dance. This is a long historical tradition in memory of when the Turks attacked Korcula. Here two groups of warriors, dressed in original costumes, through song and dance fight for the young bride. The Dalmatian sword dance is a wonderful tourist attraction and something visitors must see.

LUMBARDA - a little fisherman's village 10 min bus ride from town of Korcula. Lumbarda is very well known for its finest vineyards and production of unique white wine called 'GRK'. Lumbarda is very popular tourist spot as the only sandy beaches on island - the beach of Vela Przina and Bilin Zal are situated in close vicinity. It's a pretty place and nice location for lazy afternoons ice-creams and coffee in numerous small cafes. Lumbarda also has an old part of town which overlooks the inlets of Prvi Zal and Novi.

VELA LUKA - is situated on the very west end of the island. It is large tourist, agricultural and industrial town situated in the large bay. Well known for its sardine factory and olive oil. Good places around to visit are Tri Porti bays and islands of Proizd and Osjak - a popular day-visit spots. The tourists also have at their disposal a wide range of different excursions. Very popular are so-called "fish-picnics" and night cruises by ship trough bay, accompanied by romantic music. The pretty little islands Osjak and Proizd with their Robinson silence, crystal clear sea, flat cliffs and white beaches are a real paradise for bathers. Other excursions are organized mostly by bus to Dubrovnik, Medugorje, and a cruise of the island itself. Also it is possible to participate in sea fishing and net casting activities and in the autumn months in olive picking. Along with its beautiful nature, guests of Vela Luka can enjoy all of the advantages modern tourism has to offer such as quality accommodations, wonderful catering establishments which provide delicious seafood specialties and first class wines as well as a variety of sports, recreation and entertainment.

BLATO is one of the largest places on the Island, 40 km away from Korcula town. It is industrial and agricultural town situated in the middle of the island. Well known for it's olive oil production and sword dance Kumpanjija. Bays of Prigradica, Prizba and Grscica are in close vicinity and are good places to visit - where you can find some cafes to drink. The most beautiful view on Blato and its surroundings is offered from the road leading to the southern coast, where many accommodation facilities are located. These are the picturesque coves of Grscica and Prizba, Karbuni and Potirna. In front of them is a group of islands with beautiful beaches. On the northern coast is the Prigradica Cove with a nice harbour.

CARA - village about 20 min bus ride from Korcula town (25km) right in the middle of the Island. Cara is well known, together with Smokvica, for its famous white wine Posip which is cultivated here, as well as in Smokvica for long years. Nearby bay of Zavalatica and Zitna are good swimming locations where there are a couple of restaurants with a nice sea-view. Cara is one of the oldest settlements of the Korcula Island and is spread on the south slope of the surrounding hills, just above a large and fertile field called Carsko Polje ( pronounced Charsko Polye), covered with olive groves and vineyards. Due to it's off-the-coast location, Cara enjoys a lot of sunshine all year around, especially in the winter, when it southern position give this village an abundance of pleasurable afternoon sunshine. Cara is traditionally village of vine growers. In Carsko Polje Cara's winegrowers built their large wine cellar where a well known white wine Posip is made. This wine cellar is located near the little road that connects Cara and it's bays of Zavalatica and Zitna on the south. Zavalatica harbour used to be the port for wine exports. Nowadays, it is a small tourist resort where, as well as in the the nearby bay of Zitna visitors can find apartments and rooms to rent as well as few cafes and restaurants offering good food and great wine.

There are daily ferry and catamaran services from Split to Vela Luka. The ferry takes 3 hours, the catamaran 1 hour 45 minutes (both usually stop at Hvar Town along the way). There is also a several times a week ferry from Split to Korcula Town - this takes 5 hours 40 minutes. This is in fact part of the coastal route that starts in Rijeka and ends in Dubrovnik (or, in fact, goes on to Bari in Italy) so you can also reach island from either of these two!
