There is a well preserved Knin fort that sits on top of the Spas hills and overlooks the town. The medieval fortress dates from the tenth century but the present fort is eighteenth century. This is one of the largest fortification buildings in Dalmatia and there are great views from it over the town and surrounding countryside.

Burnum, which is only 18km far from town is also known for being an Illyrian settlement and from the year 33, it was a Roman military camp so some of its arches that belonged once to the military head quarters can be often seen on the visitors' photographs.

In the beginning of Homeland War of the 1990s, Knin became the main stronghold of rebel Serbs and eventually the capital of the Republic of Serbian Krajina. Its restoration to Croatia on August 5, 1995 is today marked as a national holiday (Victory day and Homeland thanksgiving day).
