City Walls
The most dominant symbol of the town as well as it's most important feature are the city walls. It's an impressive Middle Age construction where the corner towers are creating the town's famous historical shield. The main entrance to the city walls is located just to the left of Pile Gate and admission is charged.
Rector's Palace
This one is the most important public building in Dubrovnik and it was also the governments headquarters before as well as the Rector's residence. The palace owes its present shape to many additions and reconstructions throughout its turbulent history. Today the Rector's palace is the home to the history department to museum of Dubrovnik.
Stradun
The limestone-paved pedestrian street runs some 300 metres through the Old Town, the historic part of the city surrounded by the Walls of Dubrovnik. This is the town's main street. You'll find that it has two fountains that were designed by Onofrio and they were built during the 15th century. All the houses were built on the Stradun after an earthquake hit the city 1667th year.
Sponza Palace
This is the oldest multimedia building in Dubrovnik and it was built in 1520, representing a mixed late gothic and renaissance style. Back then it used to be a storage and customs building and right now it's the State Archive keeping the most important documents about the town's history. This complex palace was designed by chief architect Paskoje Milicevic.
Dominican monastery
Dominican monastery is the large architectural complex located in the east part of the city, close to the walls. It is the oldest monastery in the town and it's also a very important historical building. It houses some very important treasury including ancient Dubrovnik artwork. The monastery complex acquired its final shape in the 15th century.
St. Blaise church
This is the patron saint of Dubrovnik. It is situated at the intersection of two main thoroughfares, and at that same place there are public gatherings being held - "pred dvorom" and "Placa". It was built at the start of the 18th century by Venetian architect M. Gropelli. Inside the church are numerous art treasures saved from the earlier church, including a gold-plated silver statue of St. Blaise.
Dubrovnik cathedral
Built during the period from 1673 to 1713, it was designed by the Italian architect Buffalini on the site of a Roman cathedral which was also heavily damaged in an earthquake. The cathedral was reconstructed in 1986, but in 1981, archeologists made a sensational discovery which showed that in the lower strata of the building there were the remains of even more ancient cathedral dating from the seventh century.
Orlando's column
It is located in the centre of the town. It is one of the most important symbols of Dubrovnik's independence due to the fact that the flag of freedom of the Republic of Dubrovnik flew on it for more than four centuries! Since 1990 Orlando's Column has been flying a white flag which bears one word known and understood by everyone, 'Libertas'!
