It is situated in north western Croatia, to the east of the Istrian Peninsula, one hours drive from the borders of Italy and Slovenia. Besides Cres city, the island includes the following villages, some of them only accessible by dirt road and with only a few locals remaining or even uninhabited: Beli, Dragozetići, Filozići, Grmov, Ivanje, Loznati, Lubenice, Mali Podol, Martinšćica, Merag, Miholašćica, Orlec, Pernat, Porozina, Predošćica, Stanić, Stivan, Sveti Petar, Valun, Važminež, Vidovići, Vodice, Vrana, Zbičina i Zbišina.

Cres, Griffon Vulture The island’s 248 km indented coast, this means plenty of coves, bays and fine mainly pebbly beaches for you to explore on its western and southern side, while northern and eastern shore is rather steep and rocky, with some spectacular scenery, inhabited only by the biggest bird in Europe, the endangered griffon vulture, which could be often seen gliding in the clear skies. . The island has amongst the highest diversity of flora among the Croatian islands which includes among 1,300 plant species including endemic and rare plants. Animal life is diverse and includes domestic sheep, martins, wild deer, goats, small and feathered game, and numerous bird species, the best known being the Griffon Vulture, which is a protected species and constantly mobile. After being born on the island, the Griffon Vulture first travels to Greece, continuing on to Sicily and Spain. On its return it visits Italy and Austria before returning to Cres Island to mate. No venomous snakes can be found on the island.

Cres, Vrana lake Vrana Lake (Vransko Jezero) is a significant freshwater feature in the central part of the island supplying water to the towns of Cres, Mali Losinj and Veli Losinj. This “crypto-depression” is 13 metres above sea level at the surface and 60 metres below sea level at the bottom.It has been inhabited since the Stone Age, about the wealth of historical and cultural heritage testify Liburnian buildings, remains of ancient churches and monasteries. Getting to island

By motor vehicle Cres Island can be regularly accessed by car ferries from Brestova on the Istrian Peninsula or from Valbiska on Krk island (Otok Krk). During summer months a car ferry operates between Zadar and Mali Losinj.

By passenger boat the above services operate along with regular services from Rijeka. During summer months a passenger service operates between Venice and Mali Losinj.

A bus service exists from Zagreb, Rijeka and Mali Losinj.
